Upper Charles Reservation

Waltham, Watertown, Newton, & Weston, MA

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation retained our to prepare a master plan and phased construction plans for the Upper Charles River Reservation. The project area is approximately 5.75 miles long, and is part of the greater Charles River Reservation. The two primary objectives of this plan were the long-term ecological restoration of the river corridor as a self-sustaining natural environment and the introduction of public access to the river where appropriate and feasible.

Following completion of the master plan, we oversaw the design and construction administration for three phases of implementation. The project entailed the construction of 3.5 miles of pathways, boardwalks, and overlooks; a 150-foot clear span bridge over the Charles River; and a 75-foot prefabricated span over Rosemary Brook. Additional completed work included the riverfront from Bridge Street to Farwell, and, in Waltham, one portion of the stretch from Elm Street to Moody Street.
