John Joseph Moakley U.S. Federal Courthouse and Harborwalk

Boston, MA

Our team provided site planning and landscape design implementation for the new U.S. Federal Courthouse on Boston’s Fan Pier, in association with the project architects.

The project includes a major link in the linear Harborwalk network as well as a new Harbor Park. The design concept serves as a catalyst for the development of the rest of Fan Pier, as well as future development in South Boston. The goal was to create the strongest possible relationship for this major public building to its unique and dramatic site. The site plan and location of the building on the site allow for spectacular views of downtown Boston and the harbor and enable water-related commercial and recreational uses.

The most recent work at the Courthouse involved renovating the street edge by upgrading structures and furnishings—such as bollards, light poles, and seating—to prevent and withstand attack. The security improvements meet new federal security standards while upholding the original design intent to create a site that is inviting to the public.
