Carol R. Johnson Guest Speaker at URI Landscape Architecture’s 25th Anniversary Celebration
On May 10th the University of Rhode Island Landscape Architecture Department hosted its 25th anniversary celebration in the 2011 LEED Gold Certified Center for Biotechnology & Life Sciences (site designed by CRJA-IBI Group). As the featured guest speaker of the event, Carol R. Johnson charmed the attendees with stories of her work in Boston and Cambridge. With examples including the John F Kennedy Memorial Park and Old Harbor Park, Carol demonstrated how a landscape architect can make design decisions which enhance the user experience, connect people with the history and natural resources of their environment, engage existing infrastructure, and tackle challenges including contaminated soils, public safety and extreme grade change. Carol also shared her enthusiasm for public spaces with a collection of images showing children using her spaces and the elements in them in imaginative and delightfully unexpected ways.
